Identity Theif

Before we moved into our new apartment, the people here the apartment complex informed me that there are some red flags under my information and that I should look into it. But I was still okay to move into the apartment complex. So, I went into my credit reports and those were all fine. Being confused, I asked the apartment manager what she meant by "red flags." She directed me to the people who provided her with information, since she is not allowed to share anything. Anyway, it was interesting to see the information I got back from them

Apparently a man has used my social security number for the past 10 years for housing in Austin and Pflugerville, Texas. He has used his 3 different names in different orders, 8 different times for different apartment complexes. I think there were some he never lived in (according to the dates), and some which he did for awhile. I was starting to wonder if this man was just a player, and put up his different women in different apartments, since some of the dates overlapped.

Anyway, I did the whole identity theft thing with my credit, filed a police report, and did what I could. Apparently the police don't have enough information to do anything about the situation. And social security doesn't know how to help me either, since he never used my SSN for work (I made sure to check on that, also). It makes me wonder if he randomly picked a number and it happened to be mine, or if he found it somehow living in Dallas, and then used it in Austin. My mom has lost her notebook plenty of times, which has all of her kids SSN's and information in it. Maybe that had something to do with it...

Anyway, since I apparently can't clear that information from my record, I'll just have to buy a police report with the information in it, for future reference when we want to move again. Obviously, people will be able to see that information whenever we want to get into a home or move into a different apartment or whatever. So if I have the police report, the police say that should help in informing contractors that the information on there is wrong, and I've done what I can to take care of it. Kind of frustrating - why can't I get my SSN back? It's mine! Oh well - I guess identity theft is the number one theft now in America. I just hope this is my only run in with it. I am more conscious now with my information, which is always helpful. But yes - fun stuff.
